Following last week’s upfronts in NYC, it’s time for me to take a look at some of the new series set to debut during the upcoming TV season. In this edition of “Upfront About …” I take a look at NBC’s Awake.
Following a car accident, Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) begins leading a double life … across two realities. In one, his wife died in the crash and his son survived. In the other, his wife is alive and well but they’ve lost their son. He starts seeing two therapists, and although he thinks he may be losing his mind, he doesn’t want to give up either reality if it means not seeing one of his loved ones ever again.

This is the type of series that excites me, but I’ve come to watch with caution because they’re often the first to get cancelled. Unfortunately, many viewers don’t want to be bogged down with details and thinking and complicated story arcs, whereas I thrive on these. Writer Kyle Killen’s last series, Lone Star, was cancelled after two episodes, which makes me even more nervous. I’m really looking forward to Awake, but also don’t want to become too attached in case it meets an untimely end.
What are your thoughts on Awake? Do you think it will get a fair shot?
