Showtime Orders Rock and Roll Comedy Pilot Roadies

Showtime announced today that they have given a pilot production order to Roadies, a half-hour comedy that “follows the day-to-day life of a successful rock tour as seen through the eyes of music’s unsung background players – the crew members who help get the show on the road.”

Why is this the best news I’ve heard all week? Cameron Crowe is executive producer. He also wrote the pilot and is tapped to direct the one-hour debut (although the series itself will be a half-hour). Even better, Winnie Holzman (Huge, My So-Called Life, Wicked), J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk (LOST, Fringe, Person of Interest) are also executive producers on the project.

According to the press release from Showtime:

ROADIES follows a hot-ticket tour, but with a simple twist: the band is in the background and the roadies take the spotlight. It’s an inside look at the reckless, romantic, funny and often poignant lives of a committed group of characters who live for music and the de facto family they’ve formed along the way.

I am going to be keeping tabs on this one — Crowe is the perfect person for any project about the music industry! I’ve loved all of his films, especially Almost Famous and Singles. Hopefully there will be some casting news coming up soon, too!
