[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
It’s funny to arrive at the eighth episode of the season and realize that we still have four more episodes because of the bigger Season 2 order. When you get to the end of “Bug Spray, Wednesday’s new episode of Pretty Hard Cases, you’ll be super glad there’s more story to tell because it’s a sneaky good hour.
Sneaky in the sense that it delivers some moments that grab you right in the feels when you least expect it.
But first, there’s a case to catch up with. Naz is back at work and Will’s in the wind, which gives Michaels just enough ammunition to announce he’s commandeering the case. Fortunately, Sam and Kelly buy another day and get to work.
They catch a lead on Adeline and head up north, which doesn’t work out quite the way they hoped when their surveillance delivers an unexpected result that may or may not be enough for Michaels to stand down. Nathan and Naz work a sting to get Marc to reveal what he knows. That nets some additional, awkward intel.
The Sam and Kelly road trip does, however, give the partners a chance to whittle away at the wall between them, which is useful later.
Elliot’s on his way out of town to start school but a quick errand for Sam puts him on a direct path with Jackie and the two finally have it out. (The song you’ll be looking for later is here). And Sam’s mom makes her own overtures when she finds herself a little stir crazy spending so much time on her own.
Weyni Mengesha directs an episode by showrunners Tassie Cameron & Sherry White.
