In some of the most hotly anticipated casting news this year, Catriona Balfe has been cast as Claire in Outlander!
Starz and Sony Pictures announced today that Balfe will step into the role of Claire Randall, a character who has been adored in print since the early 90s. Since the role of Jamie was cast two months ago, speculation on who would land the coveted role went into a frenzy with leaked audition videos and fantasy casting pools much like the one we posted in August.
The casting also has Diana Gabaldon’s blessing: “Hard to believe lightning can strike twice, but it surely did. The moment Caitriona Balfe came on screen, I sat up straight and said, ‘There she is!’ She and Sam Heughan absolutely lit up the screen with fireworks.”
You may not recognize Catriona Balfe by name, but you might know her from J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 or the Bryan Singer / Jason Taylor digital series H+.
Coming to Starz and Showcase in 2014, Ronald D. Moore is Exec Producing in addition to penning the first two episodes. They start filming in Scotland this month.
