Sort Of Renewed for a Second Season by CBC and HBO Max

CBC and HBO Max have renewed Sort Of, the critically-acclaimed series created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, for a second season.

Bilal Baig, series star, co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer, released this statement about the renewal:

We are so thrilled that we are able to dive back into the worlds of Sort Of, and to keep exploring the evolution of all our characters (including some new ones!) as they continue to investigate who they are in the world as friends, family members, lovers and human beings.

The series follows the journey of Sabi Mehboob (Baig), a gender-fluid millennial living in Toronto. Sabi’s trying to balance all of the roles that they play. Not only are they the child of Pakistani immigrants, but they’re also a bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore/café, and caregiver to two children. Sabi feels like they’re in transition in every aspect of their life, from gender to love to family to career. Starring alongside Baig is Amanda Cordner as 7ven, Gray Powell as Paul, and Grace Lynn Kung as Bessy.

Until now, there’s been nothing like it on television. It’s a highly relatable coming-of-age story about trying to figure out who you are and your place in the world. Without a doubt, it was one of the best shows of 2021. Personally, I couldn’t be happier about this renewal.

Sort Of was an official selection at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. The critical accolades immediately followed its debut.

The first season premiered on CBC Gem in October 2021 followed by the HBO Max release in November 2021. In February 2022, it earned 13 nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards. The nominations include Best Comedy Series, and multiple nominations in the comedy writing and directing categories.

CBC’s General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports, Sally Catto, shared this about the renewal:

Sort Of speaks to the complexity of being human in the world with wit, warmth and an authentic sense of inclusivity, thanks to the distinct voices of Bilal and Fab. [It] has struck such a powerful chord with audiences, and we are thrilled to work with HBO Max and Sienna Films on the next chapter of Sabi’s story.

In addition to creating the series, Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo also serve as showrunners and executive producers. It is produced together with the Canada Media Fund. Sienna Films’ Jennifer Kawaja is also an executive producer.

A Season 2 premiere date is TBD. In the meantime, you can stream Sort Of‘s first season on CBC Gem in Canada and HBO Max in the US. And if you missed it, read our feature with Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo that was released ahead of the series premiere.
