Pretty Hard Cases Season 1 Finale Preview: “Jellybeans”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Pretty Hard Cases closes the book on its super fun first season with a finale that’s a little bit bonkers and a lot of “the gang’s all here.” Written by series creators Tassie Cameron and Sherry White and directed by White, the episode wraps up the drug trafficking arc, to a point, and cements our dynamic duo.

Pretty Hard Cases

Sam and Duff work with Tiggy, who’s represented in a way that’s not at all awkward, by Sam’s ex/Elliott’s dad, because teenagers have an odd sense of humor. Threatened with the prospect of her mother-in-law raising her son, she agrees to slide Sam and Duff in as the drivers Massiamo is expecting with the idea that maybe, just maybe, he’ll confess to killing Randy.

Pretty Hard Cases

Elliot and Jackie are tailed to his house, which makes for a very complicated setup when all roads converge at Nelson Lam’s warehouse.

It’s not just Sam and Duff undercover, but also Hamm and Naz. Then Elliot ends up in harm’s way, and it’s literally all hands on deck to save him. Tiggy ends up with the short end of the ruse, while Jackie may have potentially both helped her mom and dug in deeper. We’ll have to see.

Hamm also gets a few fun moments to prove he’s not just bluster. Shanks decides to help weed out the bad actors retaliating against Duff via Naz, which requires a little bit of assignment shuffling. That potentially complicates personal relationships, and the prospect of losing Duff doesn’t sit well with Sam.

Pretty Hard Cases

Despite their still sometimes-fractiousness, their synchronicity as partners is on full view during the UC op when things go sideways and they’re in tune improvising their characters’ bond and then teaming up with Naz for a rescue.

Pretty Hard Cases

It’s been such a good time to watch Adrienne C. Moore and Meredith MacNeil jump into these roles with both feet as veteran detectives who’ve waited a long time to find someone that matches them step for step (no offense to Naz), quirks and all, and gets shit done. I hope we see another season, because they’re just a lot of fun to watch.
