[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]
Wednesday on the next new Pretty Hard Cases, Sam’s empty nest gets decidedly less empty when Elliot and Jackie unexpectedly roll back into town with trouble on their tail. That puts a pin in her blossoming romance with Naz, who is increasingly cool at every opportunity to reveal himself as even more of a good guy.
Elliot’s return also surfaces the question of privilege, driving a wedge between Sam and Kelly and forcing Sam to reevaluate when and where Elliot deserves her help.
And that has ramifications for his relationship with Jackie. We also see that Judy and Sam’s ex/Elliot’s dad, Steve, are still super chummy post-divorce, which is an interesting spin on the typical “mother-in-law from hell” take. Sam has a few moments of vulnerability — questioning the fragility of the personal life she’s carefully been building and comparing notes with Judy on motherhood.
Kelly has her own drama with Len and her guilt about Richie being locked up — and her anger at the aforementioned privilege, which spills over to her dealings with Elliot and Jackie. We also learn that she has good reason to be distrustful of Len, no matter what he meant to her once upon a time, and how reformed he presents himself to be now. If you’re like me, you might be NOPE-ing her thought process more than once.
Tassie Cameron wrote the script directed by Samir Rehem.
