Welcome to Pilot Perception, our feature in which we break down the first episode of each new show in order to help you decide whether it’s worth your time.
The Show: The Millers, CBS in the U.S. and Global TV in Canada, Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c
The Pedigree: The show was created, written, and executive produced by Greg Garcia (Raising Hope). James Burrows (Mike & Molly) directed the pilot.
The Cast & How You Know Them: The Millers stars Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Margo Martindale (Justified), Beau Bridges (Stargate), Jayma Mays (Glee), and J.B. Smoove (‘Til Death).
The Premise: When Nathan tells his parents that he’s getting divorced, they decide to follow suit, and his mother moves in with him, while his dad moves in with Nathan’s sister. Hijinks presumably ensue.
A Taste:
What Doesn’t: The comedy is very broad – way too many fart jokes – and the writing is mostly serviceable but not all that funny. This great cast really deserves better material. Also, while it’s less racist and sexist than many of the other new comedies, being racist and sexist at all is unfortunate.
Our Favorite Line: “I know I have to tell them sooner or later, but later just feels so right.”
You Might Like This if you like family comedies about adult siblings and their parents, or maybe if you like Greg Garcia’s previous shows like Raising Hope and My Name Is Earl.
If You’re Interested: CBS is rerunning the pilot on Saturday at 8/7c, or watch it online on the CBS or Global TV sites. Then set your DVR for next Thursday at 8:30/7:30c for episode two.
