An Advance Review of the Lost Girl Season 2 Premiere!

Last Friday, I arrived home to find a wonderful package waiting for me. You’ve probably already seen the Lost Girl Season 2 photo gallery, but the package also contained the Season 2 premiere, “Something Wicked This Fae Comes”! I’ve had the chance to watch it a couple of times now and want to share some thoughts. I’ll try to keep spoilers to an absolute minimum.

First, here’s the official synopsis of the episode:

In the season opener, a nomadic Fae sideshow comes to town looking to take advantage of the chaos that the bombing of the Light Fae headquarters has wrought. Unbeknownst to the general Light Fae populace, The Ash is in a coma, and his bond with the land is weakening – which makes this the perfect time for the travelling circus freaks to steal the most precious thing the Light Fae possess.

The story picks up about three weeks following the events of the Season 1 finale. The Light Fae have been weakened and are still reeling from the attack on the Elders, which was spearheaded by Aife, otherwise known as Bo’s mama. Half of the elders are dead, and The Ash is in a coma (side note, I can’t say it, I have to sing it to the tune of The Smiths’ “Girlfriend in a Coma” – you know you want to sing it with me). Lauren is by The Ash’s side 24/7 because she can’t trust anyone else with him. Dyson is MIA – an animal off licking his wounds – while the rest are left to battle all of the incoming threats. Bo, Hale and Kenzi are on the front lines, while Lauren and Trick are working more behind the scenes. A certain wolf reappears after getting into some trouble, and is just in time to help the rest of the gang battle the latest band of bad fey.

Some random thoughts:

  • Bo learns of other fey without an allegiance, and although she’s inclined to like their chutzpah, she realizes that it’s usually not a good thing.
  • Bo appears to have more control over her powers. She knows how to use it to heal herself, and how to weaponize it.
  • The more I think about it, the more I believe that Bo never realized just how strong Dyson’s feelings were for her. In fact, I don’t think Dyson realized it until The Norn took that from him.
  • Trick could be a much more powerful presence among the Light Fey, but he’s acting more as a caretaker/puppetmaster while a total buffoon is acting Ash. I think this is a conscious decision on Trick’s part, but I’m not sure why yet.
  • Kenzi continues to be awesome, spouting out some of the best lines, but I have to say that the verbal jewels fall from the lips of others as well. I think a few from this episode are guaranteed to enter the lexicon of devout fans!
  • “Sexy sexy neopagan ritual dance party.” Remember that.
  • There’s a creepy Wednesday Adams meets the twins from The Shining kid that Bo keeps seeing.
  • And finally, there is one scene that was totally Buffy/Angel-esque in the best possible way.

Season 2 is off to a great start, and the premiere immediately left me wanting more!

Lost Girl returns Sunday, September 4th on Showcase.

  1. Thank you!

I love this show, but I’m intrigued by something: I really like the actress that plays Lauren, I think she captures her incredibly well, but I get the feeling that her character is often used as a plot device. I mean, she’s constantly mentioned as being a part of this super modern love triangle where Bo is supposed to love them both equally but all we see (and apparently will see, if the review above is any indication) is her in the background while Bo and Dyson are front center being “in lurve”. I understand it’s something many fans disliked in season one and apparently, that isn’t changing anytime soon. Shame.

Looking forward to seeing Bo using her powers to heal herself.

It sounds wicked cool, I can’t wait!

    1. Like I mentioned in the review, I didn’t want to give too much away, but regarding Bo/Lauren, the chemistry is most definitely still there, but in this episode, their relationship is way less about potential passion and more about taking care of one another. With everything going on and the threats to the Light Fey, I don’t think it really gave much opportunity to explore those two further. That being said, this is only the first episode of the season. There are 21 more after this with endless possibilities!

  2. hopefully Bo and Dyson will find a way to get back together again. its like in the last season they are making us believe loving Bo is not an option for Dyson 🙁

  3. I will say, as a Bo/Lauren shipper, your comment about the “Buffy/Angel-esque” scene makes me a little concerned, but I’m so excited for Lost Girl to be back that I can’t be too upset. Thank you for this advanced review. I’m guessing with the news recently about Cle Bennett getting a long arc on Flashpoint there might be a new Ash in town soon? We’ll see.

Thank you again! Hopefully you enjoyed the pictures and video from the panel if you’ve seen them. -k

  4. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it was simply a general observation. I personally like Bo/Dyson better because there is better development, but I have a problem when they talk about the triangle as one of the main aspects of the show when I personally don’t see it. Sure, Bo and Lauren care about one another and the chemistry is huge, but there is no balance (so far) for it to be even considered a triangle. I’m not sure the “Buffy/Angel-esque scene” is related to Bo and Dyson, but if it is, it just reinforces my thought. They are trying to sell something that is simply not there and alienating the audience along.

But alas, to me it’s just another aspect of the show. I watch for the action and for Anna Silk (I’m a guy, sue me).

  5. Here’s hoping the days till September go quickly. Have to say that I am a bo/dyson supporter, although I seem to be in the minority. Although I adore Lauren and the actress that plays here I just don’t see the same connection between those two. Hopefully there will still be heaps of Dyson in this ep, even if he is only in wolf form, I’m curious to see how the effect the norn created is handled.

  6. BTW, the Buffy/Angel vibe that I got wasn’t related to Angel losing his soul. It reminded me of a specific moment between them that has always been one of my faves. And I’m positive some/most of you may not see the same thing.

  7. I like how the show and Bo is openly bisexual, but I don’t think it’s fair that there is no MALE bisexual characters, other than that 1 gay vampire who was killed off. She even had a 3some with that married Fae couple. Surely, Fae who live 100s of years have some occasional drunken fun with the same sex they want to keep quiet about, but it would be nice to see one of the main male characters being quietly bisexual or remembering an old fling from years ago, i.e: Trick, Dyson, the other cop, or a new “bar regular” who tries to take male Fae home with him at the end of the night subtly.

  8. So excited to see this review that I’m currently resisting the urge to use a FRILLION exclamation points! (See? Only one. Much classier that way.) Lost Girl is my absolute favorite show ever. I love it for its consistent acing of the Bechdel Test. I love it for it’s well-researched and well-adapted mythology. I love how it balances sexiness, humor, creepiness, and mystery. I love absolutely every single character and, like, yearn for more background on each of them. And I even love the triangle. (I can’t be the only one who likes Lauren and Dyson equally can I?) I absolutely cannot wait to see the new uber long season! (Yes, another tasteful single exclamation point. No shrill shrieking fangirl here.)

  9. I absolutely adore this show! The characters are dymanic and exciting, the story lines are fascinating, and the actors/actresses are hot. I am personally on Team Lauren, but I do like Dyson. I can’t wait to find out more about Trick. And I need more Kenzi lines to add to my life. My friends are getting sick of me quoting her all the time. I have also declared 4th Sept to be World Fae Day. There shall be much celebration!

  10. Thanks for the awesome review
    quick questions
is the artifact they want to steal the box from the promo?

does the ash actually appear in the episode (actor seems to have a commitment to Flashpoint)

  11. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Though sometimes I feel myself as if on a heated frying pan. All those drops of LG news. Definitely it’s better 1 time to see than 100 times to hear. I’m so eager to see new episodes that I’m even going to break my rule to watch shows after season finale.
So pity there’s not much of Dyson in this episode. And why is it never enough of Kris for me in good roles? Even as Dyson. Well, what can I say? Sometimes I’m just insatiable. Let’s just hope there will be much more of Kris in the 2 season.

  12. haaaay ya quiero que empieze la nueva temporada para que se estrene mas rapido aqui en mexico……yaaaaa amo a BO, kENZI AND DYSON

    1. No offense taken … the networks often send out advance copies to journalists, bloggers, etc to help build buzz before the new season begins. I just happened to be on the list this time, and I was very grateful for the opportunity to see it in advance.

  13. I love Lost Girl and cant wait for it to be on TV again! I am a Team Bo and Dyson and hope they have lots of screen time together in S2. I love Episodes 11 and 12 of S1 the best for Bo/Dyson dynamics, but enjoy all the episodes and replay them over and over again. I know there has to be angst and drama and tension in shows and now one should be HEA, but I really want Bo and Dyson to work. Bo was not fair on Dyson in ep 14, saying she did not trust him anymore – that really hurt. I hope their trust comes together again.

Lauren – only a plot devise.

Kris is a very handsome and hot man – I enjoy looking at him on TV and I enjoy him and Anna on the screen – they have fabulous chemistry!

Love all the cast. This and True Blood (which I find very similar in storyline) are my favourite shows on TV and both are making me sad on how the heroine treats thier man. Poor Dyson. Poor Bill.

Thankyou for giving us a review of of ep 1 S2!

  14. I adore this show! I’m so happy they got 22 episodes this season! I want to see more depth to Lauren’s character and I’m dying to know what is going on in Trick’s mind. But I’m most excited about seeing what new stuff Bo can do with her powers! I do compare this show to Buffy, I think it’s as fresh and irreverent as seasons1-3 and yet a complicated and uncompromising as season 4-7 Buffy. I love how issues don’t get tied up with a neat little bow around them- how there are shades of grey. I can’t wait to see more fae species too.

  15. Omg Team Lauren all the way!
Am I the only one who thinks Kenzi needs to experiment abit?
Shame the pillerbox red haired fae with the peircings and shocking blue eyes isn’t a main or even secondary character <3
Her many glances at Kenzi's body were pretty obvious and totally hot.
Can't wait for the rest of the series, hopefully we'll find out more about Kenzi, Lauren, Saskia and Trick!

  16. i HOPE bo and dyson get back together..they are perfect together. Great chemistry..one of the main reasons i watched season 1 was because of them. i hate lauren..she’s annoying and only gets in the way. I can’t do much but hope that bo and dyson get back together!!

  17. Agree with Jas. Pls let Dyson get back to Bo.. plss.. there’ll be someway out take back Dyson’s love for Bo!!
