John Legend set to Executive Produce WGN America’s ‘Underground’

During yesterday’s WGN America panel at the 2015 TCA Summer Press Tour, it was announced that John Legend and his Get Lifted production company are set to executive produce upcoming series Underground.

A WGN America original, ordered straight to series, Underground is a story of “bravery, ingenuity and power … as plantation slaves band together in the fight of their lives for their families, their future … and most importantly, their freedom.”

Get Lifted will also oversee the score, soundtrack and all music for Underground.

Legend was quoted as saying:

“We are excited to join forces with WGN America and Sony and the talented team of writers and producers on this powerful project that we believe will inspire us all. This series has a unique opportunity to speak to the passion and courage of those who risked it all as they raced to freedom.  We are honored to bring our creative vision to this thrilling project.”

Underground stars Aldis Hodge (Leverage), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU), Alano Miller (Jane The Virgin),  Jessica de Gouw (Arrow), Marc Blucas (Necessary Roughness), Adina Porter (The 100), Mykelti Williamson (Justified), Johnny Ray Gill (Rectify), Chris Chalk (Homeland), Reed Diamond (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Jussie Smollett (Empire).

Set to premiere in 2016, Underground is currently in production in Baton Rouge, LA.
