White Collar returns to USA Network tomorrow night, Tuesday, January 17 at 10/9c, with its midseason premiere, “Checkmate.” I had the opportunity to see the episode, and it was amazing. It’s my favorite episode this show has ever had, and one of my favorite episodes of any show ever. I don’t want to spoil any of the fun for you, so here are a few hints as to why you should make sure not to miss it . . .
1. Elizabeth Burke is no damsel in distress. As I’m sure you’ve guessed from the midseason finale, this episode centers around Elizabeth’s kidnapping. The guys are going all-out to get her back, but Elizabeth is smart and brave and she’s not just sitting around waiting to be rescued.
2. Satchmo plays a real role in the case. I always love when the Burkes’ adorable dog pops up, of course, but it’s even better when he’s important to the case, as he is this week.
3. Awesome artifacts. The Nazi treasure plays a big role in the episode, and some particular items get a lot of screen time in a really fun way.
4. Peter asks Neal why he didn’t run with the treasure when he had the chance. And Neal answers. Truthfully. And you might get a little verklempt.
5. It’s a superbly constructed hour of television. Forget the art and suits and hot guys and cute dogs – the plotting, pacing, writing, and directing combine to make an episode that will appeal to all fans of good TV, even those who aren’t won over by the chance to stare at Matt Bomer for an hour.
Don’t miss “Checkmate” tomorrow night on USA Network at 10/9c!
