Step Into America’s First Spy Ring in the Series Premiere of TURN

Tonight is the 90-minute premiere of AMC’s highly anticipated spy drama TURN. Since I first heard the cast and executive producers chatting about it at the winter TCA Tour this past January, I’ve been stoked for this series that chronicles the true story of America’s first spy ring.

Based on the book Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose, we will meet The Culper Ring, “a group of childhood friends who become George Washington’s secret weapon in turning the tide of the war and, in the process, revolutionize the art of espionage.”

In the series premiere of TURN, a struggling farmer, Abraham Woodhull (Jamie Bell), is recruited by the Colonial Army to spy on the Brits. For those who are unfamiliar with the Revolutionary War era, Jamie Bell summed it up nicely during their TCA panel:

“These colonists were kind of fighting a ‘big brother.’ It wasn’t one force against another. They were all kind of the same thing. It was more of a sibling rivalry, trying to gain their independence from their bigger brother in a way. America, as an idea, wasn’t really even established yet, so it was more in the sense of a separation happening. This show delves into that really well, in the sense that it’s not so much the invaders and the occupied. You really get a sense that these people are all from the same place, and they’re fighting for that sense of separation.”

Check out this behind the scenes feature from the series premiere, and be sure to watch TURN, tonight at 9pm ET/PT on AMC.
