Pilot Perception: We Are Men

Welcome to Pilot Perception, our feature in which we break down the first episode of each new show in order to help you decide whether it’s worth your time.

The Show: We Are Men, CBS in the U.S. on Mondays at 8:30/7:30c and GlobalTV in Canada on Sundays at 7:30

The Pedigree: The pilot was written and directed by Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother), who executive produces with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (Two and a Half Men).

The Cast & How You Know Them: The show stars Chris Smith (Fake It Til You Make It), Kal Penn (House), Jerry O’Connell (The Defenders), Tony Shaloub (Monk), and Rebecca Breeds (Home and Away).

The Premise: When Carter’s fiancee leaves him at the altar, he moves into a short-term apartment complex full of men, and three older divorced guys take him under their wing.

A Taste:

What Works: The main characters have chemistry, and I like that they genuinely seem to care about each other and want to help, so I found this surprisingly endearing. And the show is clearly setting up the daughter of one of the other men as a romantic interest for Carter, which is a bit predictable but could be fun. All in all, I liked it slightly more than expected.

What Doesn’t: I found a certain “twist” in the pilot to be so ridiculous that it just made me roll my eyes. As you might guess from the premise, this pilot was fairly anti-woman (and not all that funny), but I’m hoping that will decrease once the basic backstories are established.

Our Favorite Line: “His bride just dumped him at the altar.” “Do you have to lead with that?” “It’s really your defining characteristic right now.”

You Might Like This if you like comedies about groups of guy friends. It also seems to have a bit in common with the “hapless man looking for love” stuff in How I Met Your Mother.

If You’re Interested: We Are Men premieres tonight (Monday, September 30th) on CBS at 8:30/7:30c, or you can watch the pilot on the CBS or GlobalTV sites.
