Outlander Casts for Duo Role of Frank Randall / “Black Jack” Randall

Casting continues on one of the most anticipated series in 2014, Outlander, and while leading female Claire has yet to be cast, the dual role of Claire’s husband Frank Randall and his ancestor Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall now has a face – Tobias Menzies, most recently known as Edmure Tully on Game of Thrones!

He joins Sam Heughan who has already been cast as Jamie Fraser.

If it’s been a while since you read the books, or if you’re not sure who Menzies will be playing, here’s the character description straight from Starz:

“Frank Randall is Claire’s 20th century husband and a professional historian with a deep interest in the 18th century and his own genealogy. Frank and Claire are reunited in 1945, after being separated by the war. They are rekindling their relationship when Claire suddenly disappears. Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall is Frank’s ancestor from the 18th century. A Captain in the English Army posted into Scotland during a time when rebellion was rife. The nickname is no mistake, while Black Jack Randall may look striking similar, he is nothing like the gentle, bookish Frank; he is a dark, violent man who will take what he wants at any cost.”

As mentioned earlier, Game of Thrones will know him from his role on that series, but he was also Marcus Junius Brutus on Rome.

The series comes to Starz in 2014.

Not quite how I pictured Frank or Black Jack for that matter, but Menzies is a great actor and I’m looking forward to seeing his performance in the role.

What are your thoughts? Happy with this casting choice?
