Season 1 of American Horror Story comes to Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow, so what better way to get ready for its release than with a look at some of the ghosts that the Harmon family encountered in their new home.
Larry Harvey (Denis O’Hare)
Larry first appears to Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) early in the season with his burned and distorted features. Later in the season, we learn the cause of Larry’s disfigurement, his distorted views of right and wrong, and why he is tied to the house. Larry is played to perfection by the very talented Denis O’Hare, who you might also know as one of True Blood‘s most vicious vamps, Russell Edgington, or as the always entertaining Judge Charles Abernathy on The Good Wife.
Moira O’Hara (Frances Conroy)
Moira (Frances Conroy) appears to Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) as an older housemaid who has cared for this home through the years, and is ready to help the family in any way she can. But when it comes to Ben and his lusty ways, she appears young and sexy (and played by Alexandra Breckenridge). Moira becomes a confidant to Vivien, offering some really strange advice along the way. Conroy is probably best known as the matriarch of the Fisher clan on Six Feet Under, and as Barney Stinson’s mother Loretta on How I Met Your Mother.
Hayden McClaine (Kate Mara)
The Harmons move to California following Ben’s affair with the young and beautiful Hayden McClaine (Kate Mara), who shows up at their new home pregnant and refusing to go away. Larry steps in, hitting her in the head with a shovel, and then burying her body at the back of the house. Not even death can keep Hayden away, and she tries to tend to unfinished business even in her afterlife. You might remember Mara from another FX series, Nip/Tuck, as well as Entourage.
Chad Warwick (Zachary Quinto)
My fave ghost in Season 1 had to be Chad (Zachary Quinto). He and his boyfriend had owned the house at the time of their demise, right before a Halloween bash. The infamous rubber suit – a predominant image since the series was announced – was brought into the house as a way for them to spice up their love life, but they were apparently better at fighting than loving. Chad and Vivien end up doing a bit of bonding over cheating spouses. Quinto hit our radars when he played Sylar on Heroes and became a big screen star after being cast as Spock in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.
Now that we’ve looked back at some of the first season’s most famous ghosts, be sure to enter our American Horror Story giveaway, and pick up the Blu-ray or DVD online or in stores on September 25th.
