CBC Reveals Its Summer and Fall 2022 and Winter 2023 Series

This afternoon, the CBC Upfront revealed its new and returning linear and streaming series for the Summer and Fall 2022 and Winter 2023 seasons.

The complete line up of scripted and reality series is posted here, but let’s break down those renewals we love and highlight the brand new scripted series we’re excited about.

Moonshine is back this fall for eight episodes in Season 2, picking up the trials and tribulations of the Finley-Cullens clan of adult half-siblings as they settle into their new alliance with the bikers headed by Allan Hawco to retain control of their family business, The Moonshine, a ramshackle summer resort on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Pretty Hard Cases returns next winter for Season 3 with ten episodes (vs. the 12 of Season 2) and is in production now, so keep an eye on the social feeds for the show and Cameron Pictures for behind-the-scenes goodies. Our coverage is here. It’s also now streaming in the US on Freevee.

Here’s what we can expect in Season 3: A miserably demoted Sam and a deeply undercover Kelly reunite to win their way back into the OCE after eight long months apart. Although their personal relationship has never been stronger, they need to prove they’re worthy of the department’s top cases to the new and exacting Unit Commander, Gloria Ballard (played by WENDY FREAKING CREWSON (ahem)), who has high standards, excellent clothes, and spiky hair and is intimidating AF. The rest of the ensemble cast are all set to return (woo!).

Other renewals include Workin’ Moms (Season 7), Sort Of (Season 2), Son of a Critch (Season 2), Strays (Season 2), Run the Burbs (Season 2), Diggstown (Season 4), Murdoch Mysteries (Season 16), and Heartland (Season 16).

Coroner and The Porter are not on the schedule, and Sally Catto, General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports at CBC, released these statements, so stay tuned:

Regarding Coroner: “Serinda Swan has made the decision to leave the series to focus on new creative endeavours including directing, and we are now discussing options with the producers in light of her departure. We respect Serinda’s decision to begin a new creative journey, and thank her for her dedication and commitment to bringing Dr. Jenny Cooper to life.”

For our US readers, Season 4 has been bumped to fall on The CW and will bookend with Family Law on Sunday nights.

Regarding The Porter: “The Porter recently premiered in May on BET+ in the US, following its CBC premiere in February 2022. We are in discussions with the producers and BET+ and hope to share an update soon.”

The new original series include:

SkyMed (July 10th at 9 pm on CBC TV and CBC Gem)

Set among the pilots and medical staff who perform emergency medical interventions in Northern Manitoba and evacuate patients to Winnipeg, the one-hour drama from Killjoys alumni Julie Puckrin is loosely based on the real-life experiences of her sister and brother-in-law who met flying air ambulances in the North. CBC describes it as one part medical show, two parts character drama. Its fantastically diverse ensemble Canadian cast, includes Natasha Calis (Nurses), Morgan Holmstrom (Siberia), Ace (Aason) Nadjiwon (Batwoman), Praneet Akilla (Nancy Drew), Mercedes Morris (Between), Thomas Elms (The Order), Kheon Clarke (Riverdale), Rebecca Kwan (Taken), and Killjoys’ own Aaron Ashmore. The series will also air in the US July 10th on Paramount Plus.

Fakes (Fall on CBC Gem)

Created by David Turko and a co-production with Netflix, then ten-episode, half-hour series follows two best friends who accidentally build one of the largest fake ID empires in North America. Before they even graduate high school, Zoe and Rebecca move into a sick penthouse, earn more cash than they know what to do with, and then get raided by the feds. This is the story of their ultimate betrayal, told from each of their unreliable POVs as they compete for the last word. Starring Emilija Baranac (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), Jennifer Tong (Grand Army), and Richard Harmon (The 100).

Essex County (Winter 2023)

The five-part limited series based on the graphic novel trilogy by Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Moon Knight) is a redemptive tale of family that tells the story of four disparate characters linked together through bloodlines. From old Uncle Lou, to young Lester, to Anne the country nurse and Ken, the stoic farmer, the four lead characters ebb and flow into each other’s lives, slowly weaving connections between them that ultimately save and redeem them.

Plan B (Winter 2023)

Headlined by Patrick J. Adams (Suits) and Karine Vanasse (Cardinal) and adapted from the Radio-Canada French-language drama created by Jean-François Asselin and Jacques Drolet, this six-episode Montreal-set drama follows a man on a desperate and relentless quest to save his relationship and by extension, his whole world. When he discovers the possibility of going back in time, he attempts to save his relationship, his law firm and his dysfunctional family–while navigating the repercussions and retaining the memories and emotions of his travels.

Bones of Crows (Winter 2023)

The five-part hour-long drama is told through the eyes of Cree Matriarch, Aline Spears (played throughout her life by Summer Testawich; Grace Dove, and Carla Rae), as she survives Canada’s residential school system to continue her family’s generational fight in the face of systemic starvation, racism, and sexual abuse. The series is an expanded story from the feature film version; a truly epic tale that spans over a hundred years and multiple generations of the Spears family, the series connects and deepens the events of the past with a cumulative force that propels us into the future with power. Commissioned by CBC/Radio-Canada in association with APTN and created by Marie Clements (Red Snow), The series will debut on CBC and Radio-Canada in 2023-24. The feature film, which focuses specifically on Aline Spears as she confronts her traumatic past, will be released theatrically in 2022-23.
