Don’t forget to catch Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars this Saturday night!

I have to say, as much as I’m looking forward to these last exciting Doctor Who specials, I am really going to miss Tennant.

Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars airs on December 19th at 9 pm, immediately following Inside the Tardis, a one-hour special recapping the series through the eyes of The Doctor’s companions.

There will be a new companion in the second of four Doctor Who specials this year.

BBC announced today that acclaimed stage and screen actress Lindsay Duncan has been cast as Adelaide, companion to David Tennant’s Doctor in the yet to be titled second special of 2009.

Exec producer/writer Russell T. Davies commented:

“Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I’ve been an admirer of her work for some time. We are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team and playing the Doctor’s most strong-minded companion yet.”

This second Doctor Who special will go into production this spring. There’s no word yet whether Duncan is being considered for the role of companion to our next Doctor, Matt Smith, although it would make for quite an interesting age contrast – Duncan is 58, and Smith is 26.

Duncan TV resume includes HBO’s Rome and the upcoming BBC2 drama Margaret in which she portrays The Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher.

So, what are your thoughts on this casting choice?

Details of Matt Smith’s Doctor Who contract have been revealed.

According to Wired blog
The Underwire, this past Wednesday, Smith signed on for 3 years with an option for 2 more – all at a cool £1 million (just over $1.4 million US).

This may not seem like much money, and it is less than David Tennant is earning for the same role, but Smith will most likely make up for it in assignments he picks up during hiatus from Doctor Who.

So there’s a rumour that The Doctor may not have seen the last of Martha Jones.

According to UK tabloid The Sun, Freema Agyeman may reprise her role on Doctor Who in one of this year’s specials.

At this point, the BBC hasn’t made any announcements about bringing Agyeman back for one of David Tennant’s final episodes as The Doctor, so I’ll reserve my excitement until that time. I do recall The Who Camp was rather displeased with Agyeman after their plans to give her a starring role on Torchwood were thwarted when she accepted a role on Law and Order: London.

Think we’ll see Martha Jones return before The Doctor regenerates?

BBC announced today that Ryan will star opposite David Tennant in “Planet of the Dead”, one of this year’s four Doctor Who specials, slated to air in April. Exec Producer/Writer Russell T. Davies had the following to say about casting Ryan, and shared a bit about her role:

“Michelle is one of the most sought after young actors in the country and we are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team … As always the script is being kept strictly under wraps – however we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who’s going to have a huge impact on the Doctor!”

I admit, I only know Ryan from her work on Bionic Woman. Even though I wasn’t impressed with the show, I did recognize her talent, and saw her potential. And I’ve heard she was quite good in Jekyll (which I plan to watch in the near future).

What are your thoughts on Ryan potentially becoming the Doctor’s next companion? Personally, I can see her as a great addition, and a fine match for Matt Smith’s incarnation of the Doctor.

Matt Smith will be the youngest Doctor ever – at just 26 years old. David Tennant’s successor will make his debut in 2010 for Series Five.
