Motive Preview: “Natural Selection”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

When I chatted with Kristin Lehman at the outset of the final season of Motive, she mentioned that episode 411, “Natural Selection,” was her favorite of the series’ run.

It airs this week, and while it’s not my most favorite ever — I have a few of those because I can’t name a favorite child — it’s a solid outing that successfully balances the core murder with serious, life-changing events for our regulars.

We also get Hell on WheelsTim Guinee in the lead guest role, and I’ve written before about Strange World, the late 90s series he and Lehman did that I ADORE, and which is not streaming anywhere — I hoped it might pop up in ABC’s new Throwback section of streaming archives, but not yet.

They only share one scene in the episode, but it’s a treat to watch them play. It’s also a treat to see Angie already have a wonderful familiarity and ease with Stoker, and witness the lovely evolution of Vega and Betty’s relationship.

Guinee plays a protective patriarch who’s rattled when a new friendship threatens his family dynamic. Also look for The Romeo Section‘s Juan Riedinger, The WhispersKirsten Robek, Cedar Cove‘s Matreya Fedor, and The RoyalsMerritt Patterson.

Motive airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on CTV in Canada and Sundays at 10/9c on USA in the U.S. (six weeks behind the Canadian episodes).
