Kiernan Shipka Cast as Sabrina in Netflix’s Untitled Sabrina Project

The upcoming Netflix original currently dubbed the “Untitled Sabrina Project” has cast its lead! Kiernan Shipka has landed the role of Sabrina Spellman in the series based on the Archie Comics graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Shipka grew up on the small screen as Sally Draper on Mad Men, and most recently starred opposite Jessica Lange and and Susan Sarandon in FX’s Feud: Betty and Joan.

Here’s what we know about this incarnation of Sabrina so far, according to the official character description:

An empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, Sabrina is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.

Riverdale, currently airing on The CW in the US and Netflix worldwide, is based on the Archie comic books, where Sabrina first appeared. The character was last seen on the small screen in the popular sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which had Melissa Joan Hart in the role from 1996 – 2003. The Netflix series is taking the character into darker, more dramatic territory in the same vein as Riverdale.

Here’s the logline for the currently unnamed series:

Untitled Sabrina Project imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
