CTV Announces Motive Will Wrap With Season 4

Noooooooooooooooo! That was me when I read the news. But BIG picture here is that we have had three seasons (so far) of kickass, compelling drama, and we can presume that the fourth season of Motive, beginning next month, will be equally fantastic.

I could have watched this show for a decade, so I’m disappointed, but I do appreciate getting to wrap on their own terms, which I hope they did. I’m always unsure when a cancellation is announced as a show finishes production. Season 4 wraps up today in Vancouver. It’s going out on top, with a recent spate of nominations for the upcoming Canadian Screen Awards.

Here’s what to expect in the final season [SPOILERS AHEAD]. Each member of the homicide team faces pivotal choices about their future, as they set on a course of deciding what they want their legacies to be. Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman) guides the team through a season of big change and evolution. Vega’s new role as Staff Sergeant (Warren Christie is not returning) means adjustments for everyone. Angie and Lucas (Brendan Penny) develop a deeper bond. Betty (Lauren Holly) must now mind the boundaries of her personal and professional relationship with Vega.

Guest stars announced include Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite); Will Sasso (Shameless); and Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy). Victor Zinck Jr. (The 100) and Karen LeBlanc (Cracked) also appear this season as new detectives.

Here’s what the networks folks had to say about wrapping up.

“We’re proud to have had the privilege of bringing this compelling and innovative crime format series to CTV audiences for the past three seasons.” Said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Programming, CTV Networks and CraveTV.

Motive is primed to leave an indelible mark on the Canadian television industry and its creative family here at CTV,” said Corrie Coe, Senior Vice-President, Independent Production, Bell Media. “Both clever and cinematic, each episode is exceptionally well-written with smart performances from its ensemble cast. Lark Productions, Foundation Features, and the series’ creative team led by showrunner Dennis Heaton have delivered a dynamic final season.”

“We are grateful to our broadcast partners at CTV for four incredible seasons of Motive,” said Executive Producers Louise Clark and Rob Merilees. “Thanks to the exceptional talent and efforts of our writers, cast and production team, we are thrilled to conclude our finest season to date. Season 4 builds towards its conclusion with even more compelling performances and intriguing cases.”

In the Season 4 premiere, “The Vanishing Policeman,” airing Tuesday, March 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO, Angie and Vega (Louis Ferreira) adjust to his new role while the suicide of an officer with whom Angie and Lucas worked on a crime scene turns the team’s investigation into a hunt for a cop killer.
