CSA 2015 Winning Moment: Motive Guest Star Callum Keith Rennie

In another CSA 2015 Winning Moment, we talk with Callum Keith Rennie. He took home the Best Performance in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series statue for his role on Season 2 of Motive, which is just one of the phenomenal roles he’s played over the years.

This role on Motive was so complex and so intense. What was it like for you embodying this character for a short little period of time?

Because it’s people I know – like I know the leads of the show and I knew the producers and – it is an environment that was comfortable. Sometimes, you know, some environments aren’t comfortable and this one allowed a certain freedom and to play around a bit. The director, Fred Gerber, was really sweet and gave a lot of leeway but it was really on the page. It was all there, and not overthink it, just sort of find the way through the “what if” – like, what if this was going on for you. It’s nice to play somebody who is a killer, who was doing it for the right reason.

You’ve played a lot of roles where you’ve come in for a short period of time and made a huge impression. Any chances of doing a series regular role in the near future, or do you prefer doing guest roles so you can explore as many as possible?

You never know what’s coming around the corner, right? If something great were to come around and if it is the right timing then that would be perfect, but it’s always hard to know.

Lew Ashby (Californication) and Leoben (Battlestar Galactica) are two of my favuorite characters of all time.

Those were super fun. Super, super fun. Battlestar was super fun just because it was what it was. I didn’t know it was taking off the way it was going to take off and it was nice that they kept pulling me in. And Californication with Lew Ashby was just — I have worked with David before and we’d met many, many, years before, and then we were hanging out on The X-Files movie and he just said, “I have this thing, maybe you want to do it?” And then I was like, “Yeah, I think that would be nice.”

That was probably their strongest season, I think. It’s my personal favorite season.

I love number one. I liked number one and then number two I really only watched through a screen door from a distance.

Well, thank you so much — and congratulations!
