Person of Interest’s Taraji P. Henson at NYCC 2012

Following the interview with Kevin Chapman, I was able to speak with the woman across the desk from Fusco, Detective Joss Carter – otherwise known as Taraji P. Henson. Off the bat she responds to which question she’s asked most frequently about her character. Is it about the whereabouts of the machine or Finch’s mysterious limp? Of course not! It’s whether Carter and Reese will ever get together. She speculated that Reese probably isn’t capable of having that type of relationship with anyone else especially as his days are pretty full helping people. But even if it did ever happen down the road, it would be odd to be making out with Jesus.

She said that while Carter and Fusco are working together now, that there is a sense that tension will brew between them later this year. Carter seems to get the better assignments from Reese and Finch while Fusco is stuck learning Dutch to train the dog. Plus Fusco is still haunted by his past as a corrupt cop and has things that he will need to answer for.

Taraji commented on the difference she’s found between working in film and TV.  With a film you have a character whose story is told inside a two-hour time frame. While with a TV show, new information is being delivered about your character with each script. There are plenty of things she still doesn’t know about the Carter character including if she had been previously married, and was surprised when she found out she had a son. While it is a challenging and scary process, it’s easier to do when you have great writers to work with.

Given the serious nature of the show, she says the cast and crew have plenty of fun on set between takes. Even though Jim Caviezel has a reputation of being very intense, he’s actually a big goof and she tells the story of them singing old New Edition songs found on Jim’s iPod. Both the Bobby Brown and Johnny Gill eras in case you were wondering.

Watch the press room video below, and tune in to Person of Interest tonight at 9/8c on CBS (9pm ET/PT on CityTV in Canada).
