Last Resort: Captain

Last Resort: Captain

If there’s one new ABC show to put on your watch list, let it be Last Resort. Shawn Ryan (The Shield) has done it again! Ryan is back with another unforgettable series that will leave viewers across the board wanting more. If you want good TV, here it is.

“Have I ever done anything other than what was in the best interest of this boat, this crew, and our nation?” – Capt. Marcus Chaplin

In Last Resort, we follow the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado who refuses to fire and annihilate thousands of people from Pakistan after realizing that the nation’s capital was not wiped out … the only reason to take the fire. The premise is very intriguing. We all wonder about rogue enemies of the country situations from time to time and the situations revolving the people protecting this country that never make the news – or make it but as half-truths or cover ups to what really happened. Now we get to see through a fictional world both sides of the spectrum with phenomenal writing and one of the best new casts of the season.

The writing is fantastic, and there’s a balance between comedy and drama. Yes, there is room for comedy in this one hour drama as it brings realistic happenings among comrades to the forefront. There are the moments when one makes fun of sexual harassment, and then the moments when a woman really is confronted with being in a man’s world. There are just as many laughs as there is tension. Not only do the writers bring their A game, the cast does too and the chemistry amongst each and every one of them is brilliant. Usually, viewers can tell that the actors are still getting to know each other and getting comfortable in their roles but this cannot be said for this cast. The series premiere is all around perfection. The directing, cinematography, music, etc. It’s as if you’re watching a feature film. That experience is not easy to give but Last Resort does it.

“Test us and we will all burn together. You’ve been warned.” – Capt. Marcus Chaplin

Just how quickly will your country turn against you when you question their actions? If your country has to hide the “why”, were they ever worth trusting to begin with? What happens next? Traitors, people doing the wrong thing genuinely believing they are doing the right thing, and so much more comes next and this is only the series premiere. There is oh so much to be revealed and sides are bound to change as each truth comes to light so we are in for one of the best rides of our lives.

In a generation saturated with “reality TV”, there are very few options on television that show strong characters doing not only what is best for them but everyone around them, questioning everything to protect everyone. We have just met the characters but I have a feeling they will be remembered for a very long time for the choices that they are going to make in the coming weeks. This is a true test of character if there ever was one higher than the rest. Your heart may have been racing during the premiere but don’t expect it to slow down anytime soon because the rollercoaster has just begun. Last Resort is a thrill you don’t want to miss, so set your DVRs to Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC (8pm ET/PT on Global TV in Canada) so you don’t miss one second of it!
