This is the Lost Lost report!
Skipping a week, I am this week delivering both Episode 13: The Candidate and Episode 14: Across the Sea.
So lets start with The Candidate
This episode deals mostly with Jack and Locke, and Jack and FLocke.
The list of candidates that Flocke gathered that were captured by Widmore’s people were being corralled into the bear cages at the “zoo” and Jack frees them to join FLocke in his attempt to leave the island.
Finding out the plane was laced with C4 explosives they redirect their plan to steal the submarine, but Sawyer and Jack have a different plan.
I lost track how many times Sawyer double crossed Widmore and FLocke, so we will just say as always Sawyer was on Sawyer’s side.
They escape in the sub without Flocke and Claire who gets left out in the scuffle. But it was then that FLocke’s double cross was revealed and the C4 is on the sub.
In the Sideways Reset Jack is trying to figure out why Locke wont undergo the surgery that could give him his legs back, and in digging he finds out that Locke’s father was left in a brain damaged state. Locke feels guilty about what happened and his wheelchair is his punishment.
And this is when the slow burn of the episode reaches its dramatic flash of white hot pain. Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Sayid, Hurley, Sun and Jin are on the sub. Three of them don’t make it out. Very sad ending.
Then The Last Recruit.
This week was the biggest flashback of all starting off with a shipwrecked pregnant mother who washes up on shore and is taken in by a mysterious lady who helps her deliver her twins. One she names Jacob, the other … she doesn’t name and is never given one throughout the episode. Then the mysterious woman murders the mother.
This entire episode is about Jacob and the Man in Black.
She adopts the twins, and teaches them about the “heart of the island”, a glowing power source that others would covet and they are sworn to protect, just as she has protected it. Each lead different lives until finally a conflict leads them to their destiny. Jacob takes his brother to the light and “feeds” him to it which grants him his power to turn into the smoke monster, and they are forever incapable of causing the other’s death.
The mother leaves them a gift of the two stones, one black, one white, and we flash forward to what might be the very first episode when Jack finds the skeletal remains of the Man in Black and his adopted mother with the stones in the cave they live in early in the series.
The Smoke Monster can take the form of anyone who is dead, including himself. And is now FLocke, still trying to escape the island.
Only one more episode left before the aptly named finale “The End” and we still don’t know what’s going on.
Until next week … Get Lost.
