Last night’s Lost is all about Desmond. Well a little about Widmore, but that goes along with why it is all about Desmond.
Strangely enough it is nearly half of the way through the episode before he calls anyone Brother.
We learn that in the Sideways Reset, Desmond was never on the Island, and yet somehow finds himself on the same Oceanic 815 flight that has now safely landed in LA. But why is he in LA? Well he is a respected business man who works for … Charles Widmore? And they are bonded colleagues who HUG!
What’s more is that Widmore’s son is a progressive musician who is mixing classical music with modern rock. So obviously they need Driveshaft’s bass player, Charlie. Desmond has to babysit Charlie (who has found himself in jail and bailed out by Widmore) and Charlie shares his near death experience with Des, which by the sounds of it, he saw his experience on the Island where he fell in love with Claire.
Charlie, now addicted to that moment in near death plays a game of Flatliners and forces Desmond’s car off the road. There is a beautiful parallel of Charlie in the sunken vehicle with his hand against the window marking his death on the Island, which Desmond gets a flash glimpse of “NOT PENNYS BOAT” written on Charlie’s hand.
Yep … Mind Blown.
Desmond meets Eloise Widmore – who we know as Eloise Hawking, the mastermind behind some movement that knows a little too much about the Island (the white haired woman in that room with the giant pendulum, where she encourages the Oceanic Six to return to the Island)
But all that goes on in this episode … and this whole season is summed up in one park bench chat with Daniel Widmore (who of course we know as Daniel Faraday), who has a dream glimpse of his life not as a musician, but a quantum mechanics and physics genius. He theorizes that a large burst of energy has set time askew, and says:
What if this … all this. What if this wasn’t supposed to be our life? We had some other life, and for some reason we changed things. I don’t want to set off a nuclear bomb. I think I already did!”
So he knows, and now we know. The Sideways Reset is “not right” and they are feeling the effects of the parallels.
I also see other parallels. While people were thinking everyone on the Island was dead, the Island was purgatory, and Jacob was God, Smokey was the Devil, I have a different thought.
Jacob is not God, but a force of nature we will call Order. Order only exists to make sense of things, and Order has no purpose without Chaos. Chaos is the Man in Black. Eloise Hawking, might be God as she seems to be fully aware of everything that has happened and will happen. Even in the Sideways Reset, Eloise speaks with an awareness that implies she knows everything.
And now it seems that Desmond is the new Messiah, who has a new crusade. To find the members of Oceanic 815, and show them the world they are missing.
The countdown begins. Only five episodes left.
Until next week … Get Lost.
