First Impressions – Cougar Town

First Impressions – Cougar Town

I recall seeing a promo for Cougar Town around the time of the ABC Fall 2009 upfronts and thinking it had potential. This new comedy from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence made its debut this past Wednesday, and it has earned a permanent spot on my must watch list for this fall!

Courtney Cox is perfection as Jules, a recently divorced mother of a teenage son and real estate agent trying to move on with her life. She’s been unsuccessful in her attempts get back on the bicycle, but a night out on the town with younger friend Laurie (Busy Phillips) leads to her first hysterical foray into cougar-dom with a hottie named Matt.

Then there’s the matter of Jules’ provocative advert that’s being plastered all over town by Laurie, and quickly stolen by pre-pubescent boys as … how do I say this tastefully … inspiration.

I was impressed by the rest of the cast, particularly:

1) Neighbour and nemesis, Grayson (Josh Hopkins), who has a constant stream of younger women leaving his house, and the source of one of the funniest lines, “You see, it’s not a ‘walk of shame’ if someone does it with you.”

2) Longtime friend and neighbour Ellie (Christa Miller), a new mother with a somewhat unattractive husband (Ian Gomez) that is living vicariously through Jules’ singledom.

3) Deadbeat ex-husband Bobby (Brian Van Holt) who rides a lawn mower shirtless while singing Foghat’s “Slow Ride”. Oh, and did I mention where he’s mowing the lawn? Outside his son Travis’ school!

My verdict? I laughed from beginning to end, and totally plan to watch it again this Wednesday. Here’s a look at the second episode, airing September 30th.
